In the light gray house
There was a fan
And a handsome man
And the feeling of…
Whatever may come
And there were two dogs lying on their beds
And a hydrangea vase
And an empty fireplace
And a juicy ripe peach
To eat on the beach
And a book to be read
In a blanketless bed
And sheets and a pillow and an open bedroom window
And a quiet young lady who was looking around
Goodnight room
Goodnight summer
Goodnight whatever may come
Goodnight long days
And the handsome man
Goodnight dogs
Goodnight beds
Goodnight peach
And goodnight beach
Goodnight bare feet
And goodnight sunshine heat
Goodnight green trees
And goodnight gentle breeze
Goodnight ice cream stand
And goodnight beach sand
Goodnight summer
Goodnight cricket sound
And goodnight to the young lady
Looking around
Goodnight tan
Goodnight warm air
Goodnight summer everywhere

Great poem!
That is a wonderful poem, Jane. Thanks for sharing it as we all begin the goodbye to summer this year.
I was just reading Goodnight Moon last night for the first time in about 25 years. As a child, the illustrations scared me–so I just wrote it off. I didn’t read it again until last night when my daughter demanded it. I was pretty surprised to realize the book is really as good as everyone says. And my daughter didn’t seem at all traumatized by the illustrations. Anyway, I like your take on it!
The whole time I was reading this I was thinking of Goodnight moon, one of my daughter’s favorite(as is mine)
Very nice poem
Maribeth
Very well done! That song will be in my head the rest of the day, but I love you anyway!
Have a great weekend 🙂
Love the photos, and the poem… fabulous! You just gave some peace in my hectic life, thanks!!!!!
Love it.
I can tell you I’m ready to give summer the old heave ho around here so that we can get out without melting in the stinking heat and have some FUN!
Beautiful…

How cute!! I love that book!
I would say goodnight to summer, but it will be hot here until at least October.
Well done–but why oh why do we have to leave the handsome man behind? I say if he lookted good, bring him along for fall and winter! xoxo
beautiful picture and i love the poem!
Beautiful…
Good night, Summer… damn it, you were quick.
Beautiful pictures and beautifully written poem. Thank you!
This is so clever! And I agree, the photos are gorgeous!
Hahaha! LOVE it! I love the way that book flows and your poem fit it perfectly!
Oh, it’s perfect! And it hits perfectly on that melancholy end-of-summer feeling. Marge would be proud! 🙂
It is such a poignant time of year. I LOVE Autumn, but Summer ending does signify so much. I love what you wrote, that is book is such a classic! Thanks for putting what it in my heart this past weekend into words!
My beautiful wife writes so well and has such a way of capturing feelings that some readers might believe that she dislikes the coming seasons. But even though summer being over is a relatively bad thing for a person who loves the sun, the end of one season brings the beginnings of others. Winter is a great time, it is the time we began our relationship, fell in love, and became husband and wife. So the cold and the shorter days might make some people cringe, never forget that it is our magical time of the year.
I totally just read that in my head with the same intonations and voice that I used to read Goodnight Moon to my kids.
Great job!
Oh, lovely. Now I’m all warm inside. Perhaps summer isn’t over yet, after all.
