Part 1 –
Monday night Matt and I took William and Alexander out to Target to get some birthday presents for Benjamin. Even though he’s turning 1 and I know he doesn’t know it’s his birthday… I still wanted to go without him to get the boys excited for his special day!
We found our toys for Benjamin in record time.
But then… we needed to stop by the Thomas Train section.
Then the Leap Frog games.
Then the Playskool toys.
And – of course – Hot Wheels, Spiderman, Transformers, Tonka and all the other car/truck/train/”bad guy” sections there were.
Trying to pry them away from the Toy Department was like prying a bee away from honey… nearly impossible.
Check out was crazy because, well… they were playing “swords” with the plastic buckets we got them. Yes, the buckets were the swords.
While in line a family with 2 girls were behind us. The girls were sitting in the cart amused, but slightly horrified by William and Alexander’s “playing.” They were sitting there each holding bathing suits. Quiet. Calm. And reserved.
The mother of the girls smiled at me and asked if I knew what I was having… to which I responded, “Yes, a baby boy.” She said, “Wow… you’re going to have your hands full.” To which I said, “Oh yes, and I have another one at home.” My husband grabbed me hand and smiled.
On the way to the car the boys wanted to race each other. Then proceeded to wrestle each other into the car. And then play the “I was in my car seat first game” over and over again.
For the first time every, my husband whispered to me, “God bless you. God bless you. 4 boys, under 4.”
Part 2 –
Last night we were all sitting around the living room while William and my husband played Star Wars Lego on XBOX.
(XBOX usage is a post within itself… will get back to this topic at another time!)
As we were all lounging around… William took one look at my feet and stated, “Your toenails are disgusting Mommy.”
(To which they are. I give him credit for noticing.)
But to which I responded, “Gee, thanks William. That’s not very nice to say to someone.”
In his 3-year old innocence he asked me, “Why?”
And through trying not to laugh (since seriously, my toenails are horrible looking) I explained to him why it isn’t nice to tell someone that they look “disgusting.”
After we chatted and he continued playing his game, I went into the kitchen to make myself something to eat… which is when I heard my husband take over the conversation.
As I was leaning against the kitchen wall, I heard it all go down…
He whispers to William, “Buddy… you never tell Mommy anything other than how beautiful she is. There’s nothing about your Mommy that is disgusting. She’s a beautiful Mommy, with beautiful everything, even toenails.” (Again, total lie about the toenails, but I’ll give me props!)
Ahh… my hero. My handsome-husband-hero!
(It’s a good thing I’m already pregnant with baby #4… !)

I found all of you gorgeous ladies via Twitter. I am so glad I did. I took some time to check out the site. I couldn’t help but notice all of you are too darn good looking!! Makes me want to go to crunches or something. Adding this to Google Reader now. -Mae
That’s great. You know, if I were behind you at Target, my three girls probably would have grabbed the closest thing and joined your boys!
It wasn’t us in the line behind you, my princess would be doing something along the lines of what your boys were doing. I never remember her being calm, quiet and reserved. That family behind you must have been a mirage, LOL!
I’m pretty sure I’ve told my husband his toenails were disgusting, several times.
I would love to be around 4 boys under 4, it’s been so long since my baby boy was little. 13 years old tomorrow, where does the time go?
Your hubby rocks!!! Major points.
Funny post. Having all men in the house should make you feel like a Queen. I am anxious to know what my daughter Steph is having…She could have 4 little men too….which is not all that bad.
Aw! That is so nice. You and your husband are doing a great job raising little gentlemen. As for the Target scene. They are boys, what do you expect? I have three girls, and while they can get rowdy now, when they were little, they were calm and easily amused. Little boys just play so differently. I am glad to have a class this year that is mostly girls (12 girls, 3 boys). It makes such a difference teaching. No pushing, kicking, slamming into people. Instead it’s talk, talk, talk… Girls love to talk. They are both blessings, and just the way God wanted them to be!
No wonder you’re on #4!!
🙂
what a sweetheart! it is funny to watch little kids and see the differences in temperaments and play styles of girls and boys.
Aww! Your hubby is so sweet…AND boys…yes, I have one, and now they say I’m having a girl! Secretly though, I think boys might be easier – no emotional things, so bickering over who gets to wear who’s clothes, etc. 🙂
I meant “no” bickering!
Isn’t it wonderful when you have a sweet hubby to teach your boys how a woman should be treated? I only have girls, but my husband definitely shows them how they should be treated. I love it too. How sweet!
That’s is so cute about the buckets! My boys would definitely do something like that. It’s amazing how little boys use their imaginations!:)
I had three kids 3 and under – they are now 5, 3 and 2, but everytime someone in a store would say to me – “Wow, you’ve got your hands full!” I always reply to them – “better full than empty!” While most days, YES, I do have my hands full – I couldn’t imagine my life without them, and I’m sure you feel the same! 🙂
That is just about the sweetest thing I’ve ever read! I have tears in my eyes, gosh darn it! “Beautiful everything” – He really is your soul mate, isn’t he? He must be, because he even knows your soul is gorgeous!
That Target mom was just jealous. You know inside she was wishing her quiet girls would give her a little more action! Trust me, if my daughter was that reserved, I’d have to have her head examined. She is anything, but quiet, at Target – and sit in the cart? No way!
Your husband is getting some major brownie points! 🙂
God bless you. God bless your man.
Wow! He had me at “God bless you, 4 boys under 4”. The whole father son talk would have had me promising not to spend any money for months just to make him happy!
Hooray for our hubbies!
Geez, we need to bottle him, Audrey!
Awwwwwwww!! Audrey, Matt is so sweet!!!! What a touching post! Thanks for sharing! 🙂
