This past week I spent three days staying with Audrey at her home while her husband was out of town.
With three boys all under 3, Audrey appreciates the extra hands with meals, baths (Alexander calls them “tubbies”), and bedtime.
My husband joined us for dinner on two of the nights, but he had a function to attend on the third night.
Now, I have never been worried about my husband eating, and I assumed that he certainly would eat.
But.. when I stopped in at my house to pick up a few things, I was surprised at his choice of Dinner for One.
This is what I encountered as I entered my kitchen:
Frying pan. Frying pan smoke. Frying pan spatter. Cutting board with tomato remnants. Open package of bologna.
And there was my husband, sitting on a kitchen stool, devouring a fried bologna and tomato sandwich while reading the sports section of the newspaper.
I looked at him for a moment. And then I remembered that he ALWAYS ate fried bologna and tomato sandwiches when we were dating (all those decades ago!).
And I was the one who transformed him into the healthy eater that he is (or I thought he is) today.
He looked at me all innocent and coy. And he asked, “Do you want one?”
The smell. The mess. The unhealthiness of it all.
“Sure,” I said.
And we sat in our kitchen and ate fried bologna and tomato sandwiches like we were teenagers on a first date.
I smiled all the way back to Audrey’s house.
And it got me thinking. What is YOUR favorite Dinner for One?
