Three years ago today I sat in the waiting area on the maternity floor of Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.
Audrey was in labor with William, ready to become a mother for the first time.
Even though she she is my big sister, Audrey is littler than me. At 5’1″ and weighing in around 110 lbs. (when she’s not carrying a baby!), even at 9 months pregnant she was still tiny, and I worried about how she was going to squeeze a big baby from her little body.
I had gotten a call from my parents the night before around 9 PM saying Audrey’s water had broke and she had just arrived at the hospital. By 10 PM the three of us were in the car, on the way to New York City. (I remember we stopped at Dunkin’ Donuts before we left Rhode Island and I got a Mocha Coolatta (of course) and a chocolate sprinkled donut. Don’t ask – I have a strange memory for details.)
Waiting for word of William’s arrival (my godson!) was excruciatingly long. We saw many families come and go from the waiting room, the baby’s arrival they were waiting for happening faster than William’s.
By that time, both of my brothers, their wives and their kids had joined us. And Matt’s (Audrey’s husband) best friend had come up from Washington D.C. (he is William’s godfather). So the twelve of us basically were the waiting room.
When Matt finally came through the door, camera in hand and huge smile on his face, he announced what we had all been waiting for…
William had arrived! All 7 lbs. 6 oz. of him.
Auntie’s little man…
And now, three years later, he is the big brother – of two little brothers! And Audrey is a mother of three.
William is three years old today. And he started his first day of preschool. It’s official – Auntie’s little man is a big boy. Just like my big sister is really my little sister.
Three years! Where did the time go?
Auntie loves you sooo much, William!
