I wish I could say Alexander is totally trained.
But that would be a lie. And who would I be kidding?
We had somewhat of a setback this past week because my husband was away on business and being 8 months pregnant… it’s been a little tough booking it back and forth to the bathroom with Alexander every time he “looks” like he’s about to go. (OK, nearly impossible for me to book it back and forth.)
So, I caved. I tossed the undies aside and replaced them…
I put him in Pull-ups this week. Which ironically enough he calls “underwear” since they aren’t actually “like” diapers in his mind. There’s no sticky tape on each side, so in his mind… he’s “a big boy.” And who am I to crush that statement? It melts my heart.
I do feel lucky that Alexander’s prized possession is still the Potty Watch from One Step Ahead. Every time it goes off he announces excitedly that “it’s potty time!” but then says he “doesn’t have to go.” Aww…
He has been wearing it out and about lately, too. I think I may even have “sold” one at Target yesterday to a mother of a little girl while we were waiting in line. She couldn’t get over how cool it was and her daughter practically wanted to gnaw it off of Alexander’s wrist!
It even went off yesterday afternoon while we were picking up William from preschool… and Alexander told willing onlookers all about the Potty Watch and how “it works.” The good thing is that Alexander may only start preschool WITH William in September if (and only if) he is wearing underwear.
William, on the other hand, who is completely potty trained – has had a couple of overnight accidents lately. I don’t know what has been going on… but he feels so badly about it. It’s just heartbreaking.
Not to mention that when I’ve stripped his bed to clean the sheets, he feels even worse.
But one thing came to my rescue… One Step Ahead sent me a set of Dri Nights Waterproof Mattress Protectors for Alexander… but they’ve been PERFECT for William. And they work like a charm. I just lay it over his sheet and the waterproof-ness gives me (and William) a sense of relief… just what this mama needs right now at 3 am when I need some sleep, but having a little man running in to my bedroom to announce he had an “accident.”
So this is the Potty Training Adventure in my home this week. My husband is coming home today… so Alexander will hopefully get “back on track.”

I have been thinking about potty training JJ before baby number 2.. it is a scary proposition.. that watch is so cool!
I am not looking forward to potty training again. I have a 2 year old son and my 8 year old was pretty easy. So I know this one is going to be diffcult. I also used the plactic cover, they work great!!
Oh, hang in there, honey! There may be a few backwards movements with the new baby coming, I’m sorry to say. I TOTALLY understand the pull-ups! My DS is almost 5, and I have him in pull-ups at night, because I am 7 months pregnant and have a hard time cleanign sheets every day (I make my kids strip the bed if there is an accident). My DD has been trained since February (I think) and I am sure we will have some “acting out” with our new baby.
I am so excited for you! I LOVE all your boys names, and you have such a beautiful family. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Potty training is such an adventure isn’t it? My oldest 2 weren’t using the potty until pretty late(like 31/2), so we didn’t get too many nighttime accidents once they had it down, but they still had the plastic covers on their mattresses(love those!). I am thinking of starting little J soon, but even though I have done it before, I am not even sure where to start. It sounds so daunting. And to do it when you’re 8 months pregnant, girl you deserve a medal!! My mom always says that no one every went to Kindergarten wearing diapers.(However, while training I used to think, maybe my kid will be the first one!) Maybe I will have to get a potty watch, sounds genius!
I would try potty training rewards. I used it for our son and he loved pushing the button hearing he is a Big Boy and opening a door to find a chocolate treat. He really became involved. He was peeing and pooping in his potty within a week. I know every child is different, but have a look and see if this would work for you. http://www.pottytrainingrewards.com
It’s really hard to do potty training without full support. You’ll get there – so will they 🙂
Wishing you all the luck! It takes dedication and time indeed.
Oh, the joys of potty training! If it’s any consolation, my kids are thrown off completely when my husband is gone, too. Just remember, this stage won’t last forever.
