8 Things Meme

We’ve been tagged!

Thank you Dawn at Coming to a Nursery Near You!

Here are 8 facts/things/habits about myself:

1. Since my father was married before my mother, and had my 2 brothers from that marriage, my birth order is a bit different… I’m the oldest on my mother’s side of the family. First daughter. First grandchild. First-born for my mother and father together. But I’m the third child for my father. Don’t worry, no complex here.

2. I am obsessed with Danielle Steel books.

3. I have 3 TV shows that are my all-time favorites – Murder, She Wrote; The Golden Girls; and People’s Court. I still Tivo them everyday and watch them at night.

4. I pinch my knuckle. That’s my nervous habit. Been doing it since I was a toddler.

5. The first time I met Matt (my husband) we both were dating other people. But the second I laid eyes on him, I had this “feeling” rush through my body about him. Six months later, both (finally) unattached… we started dating. That was it.

6. I made Junior Nationals in swimming when I was a junior and senior in high school. And I held the all-time Rhode Island record in the 100 yd breaststroke for 14 years.

7. I had major dental and orthodontic work and had to have 10 teeth pulled by the time I was 8.

8. I prefer hot over cold weather.

We have a few bloggy things to take care of, but first we’ll start with a Big Congratulations…

Happy 31st Anniversary to Mom and Dad!

Mom and Dad celebrating 31 years in Bar Harbor, Maine

Mom and Dad were married on August 14, 1976 and are celebrating their 31st anniversary today!

As long as I (Jane) can remember, I have looked at my parents’ marriage as the ideal marriage. They share genuine, unconditional love and respect for one another, they laugh together and are truly best friends.

I always knew that I would settle for nothing less than a man who treated me the way my Dad treats my Mom. He supports and encourages her, believes in her and wants to make her happy. He is always going out of his way to do something special or unexpected for my Mom… anything to bring a smile to her face, just because he loves her.

And I always knew that I wanted to be the kind of wife that my Mom is to my Dad. She lets him know how appreciated he is, and that she thinks he is the smartest, funniest man on earth. She makes sure that she buys his favorite Edy’s fruit bars or his favorite razor at the market. She takes care of him and reciprocates his little pleasant surprises just to make him happy.

One day my husband Steve said to me, “I really want our marriage to be just like your parents’ marriage.” That statement meant more to me than he’ll ever know.

Happy Anniversary, Mom and Dad! Thank you for being an inspiration to us all!

Over the weekend we were so honored and humbled to receive The Blogger Reflection Award from MorningSong. MorningSong is a beautiful, true gem of a woman with a lovely family. She is kind, insightful, thoughtful and, of course (our favorite word!) fabulous!! Thank you so very much for the honor, MorningSong!

Now we are to follow these rules:

Rules of participating:
1. Copy these rules.
2. Reflect on five bloggers and write a least a paragraph about each one.
3. Make sure you link this post so others can read it and the rules.
4. Leave a comment and let them know they’ve been given the award.
5. Display the award icon on your site.

Our five recipients are:

1. Our friend Chrissy from Life On Manitoulin. Chrissy is one of the most caring and big-hearted people we know. She is always there with a kind or encouraging word, or promoting the businesses of her friends and family. She genuinely wants to see others happy, and that is just one of the many wonderful qualities that makes us love her so much!

2. The lovely Julie from Pink Morning. Julie is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside. Julie has a wonderful relationship with her sisters, and we know a thing or two about just how wonderful sisters are! 🙂 Julie’s comments always bring smiles to our faces, and we always know that reading her blog posts will leave us feeling blessed just to know her.

3. Fellow Rhody-native Dawn from Coming to a Nursery Near You. Besides being a native of our home state, Dawn just connects with us on so many other levels. She is a compassionate, caring woman who always comes through with a kind word or a kind gesture when most needed – she even gave us our very first internet hug! Hugs right back at ya, Dawn!

4. The amazing Melody from Slurping Life. We hope Melody isn’t feeling “awarded out” because she certainly gets recognized for being so wonderful an awful lot! She is so devoted to her very special boys (and female doggy!), and is always doing something to help others. Case in point, she is holding a fundraiser for precious little Parker Hodgson on her blog starting Monday, July 23rd and running through July 27th. Melody is a special, special woman and she truly blesses so many people.

5. Our friend Nadine from Just Being Me. Nadine has already been given this award, but we just cannot think of her or her blog without becoming reflective. She just gives off such a calm and peaceful aura, and she’s so warm and kind. Her posts always so insightful and perceptive. She reminds us of a wise and wonderful sage.

Thank you for giving us so much Reflection in your blogs, ladies!

My Family Life tagged us a few weeks ago, and we never did the meme – how rude! (Especially since we have been taught such good manners.)

We thought we’d give our list of eight things we know for sure a little summer flavor!

1. Getting sand in your swimsuit is only a temporary inconvenience; the pros (digging, playing, getting dirty) far outweigh the cons (chafing, diaper butt, sandy shower)…

2. Using a slide solely for sliding down is highly overrated…

3. A campfire on the beach + S’mores = Summer Night Perfection…

4. Water can be a whole lotta fun…

5. This is unacceptable beach attire. But good for her anyway…

(And yes, we actually took this picture of a fellow beach-goer, who was in her 50’s or 60’s)

6. Kids need to know the importance – and experience the joy – in forging a bond with animals…

7. Man is to grill as moth is to flame…

8. The world really is your oyster…

Now for the fun part — the questions:

“What were you doing 10 years ago?”

Jane – I had just finished my junior year of high school and I was getting ready for my Junior prom! I was looking for a summer job (I ended up getting a job as a nanny) and having fun with my boyfriend and my friends.

Audrey – I had just finished my Freshman year at Brown, and I was taking a few summer courses to get ahead on a few credits. I was at a horrible waitressing job at a restaurant where the bosses inappropriately asked out the waitstaff. I didn’t last long at that job – my dad didn’t like me working there!

Sharon – My husband and I took a two-week trip to Portugal. It was a dream trip! We spent 14 days driving from Lisbon to the Algarve, up the eastern border of Portugal up to Porto in northern Portugal, and then down the coast back to Lisbon. My husband is of Portuguese descent and had always wanted to take this trip!

“Five snacks you enjoy:”

1. Edy’s Strawberry Fruit Bars (Sharon)
2. Nutz Over Chocolate Luna Bars (All of us!)
3. Baked Lays (Jane)
4. Potato Chips & Dad’s famous clam dip! (Audrey)
5. Fruits and veggie slices (Sharon and Audrey)

“Five songs to which you know all the lyrics”

1. Ring of Fire – Johnny Cash (we sang this song to William when he was a baby)
2. Eternal Flame – The Bangles (we sang this song to Alexander when he was a baby)
3. Benny and the Jets – Elton John (we sing this to Benjamin – he is still a baby!)
4. Sweet Home Alabama – Leonard Skynard
5. Walking In Memphis – Marc Cohen

“Five things you would do if you were a millionaire:”

1. Invest in more real estate (Sharon)
2. Buy a vacation home in a warm climate (Audrey)
3. Promote literacy by developing and funding reading programs for children of all ages (Sharon)
4. Travel the world with my family (Audrey)
5. Start an animal sanctuary for all animals – no kill, OF COURSE! (Jane)

“Five bad habits:”

1. Pinching my knuckle – I’ve been doing it since I was a little girl (Audrey)
2. Obsession with Edy’s Strawberry Fruit Bars – I was up to 2 boxes a day at one point!! (Sharon)
3. Spending too much time on the computer (Jane)
4. I’m too attached to my Treo (Sharon)
5. I don’t wash off my eye makeup before bed (Jane)

“Five things you like doing:”

1. Working together
2. Hanging out together
3. Entertaining with family and friends
4. Having great conversations
5. Beach in the summer, skiing in the winter

“Five things you would never wear again:”

1. Wide Coullotts (all of us!)

We were tagged by our blogging buddy Tamara at Mommy’s Getaway Blog for the “10 Things I Love About My Life” meme.

Since there are three of us, we’ll each take three, but #1 will be our combo “thing we love”!

1. We love working together everyday. This isn’t a cliche – it’s absolutely true. Amid the exciting chaos of a 2 1/2 year old, a 1 1/2 year old and a 7 week old, two giant-but-adorable doggies, the need to constantly brew coffee, the occasional electrician/plumber/contractor who has some immediate concern, and a husband or two who occasionally want home-cooked dinners, we get our work done, have a lot of laughs, and truly savor every moment.

2. Audrey: I love my three children. Words can’t describe the unconditional love I feel for them.

3. Sharon: I love the sounds of my grandchildren saying, “Hi Grandma!” or, “Hi Gama!” or whatever first syllable they utter that I know means me! It’s better than anything an iPod can give me!

4. Jane: I love going to bed at night with my family snuggling in bed with me – my husband to one side of me, my dog Bismarck on the other side of me (snoring!), and my dog Ryder at my feet, her head nestled on my legs.

5: Sharon: I love gardening. I love planting, I love getting my hands dirty, I love the smell of the earth, I love the fruits of my labor. It’s almost like raising children or writing – you take a seed and watch it grow.

6. Audrey: I love warm, sunny days… sitting on a pool deck watching my kids splash and play in the water.

7. Jane: I love the sun coming through the clouds after it rains…
the way the rays peek through a few at a time, until the clouds part and expose the blue sky, drying the rain.

8. Sharon: I love opening my eyes each morning, kissing my husband and then looking out my bedroom window
to the thriving little New England town where I live. I love the sounds of the milk deliveries, the weather (whether it’s the whistling wind, the howling snow or sizzling sun), I love seeing people, pets and the “aliveness” of everything around me. I love each new day for the opportunities it brings me to love and be loved.

9. Audrey: I love the sound of my front door opening, letting me know my husband is home from work – or just from being out!

10. Jane: I love my neighbors.
I am so grateful for their kindness and generosity. It’s just so nice to have smiling faces waving to you as you come and go, sharing house tips and tools, offering to help out with anything. They are wonderful.
