I still have flashbacks.
Seriously, here I am 20 years later, and I’m still having flashbacks.
Colonial Day. 1988. Barrington Middle School. The assignment was to dress up in Colonial attire.
My mother, being a teacher and knowing how important it is to participate, spent ALL night sewing a Colonial dress for me. Made a hat. Even decorated my 1988 Samba shoes to make them look more “Colonial.”
Imagine my surprise (OK, horror) when I showed up at school and maybe 2-3 kids were dressed up. Here I was in head-to-toe Colonial attire and the other kids weren’t.
Ahh! I went from feeling horribly bad for my mother… To… How the hell am I going to stay dressed like this ALL day?
Well… I did stay dressed like that all day. Even received extra credit in my Social Studies class because I was the only one who dressed up! (Thank you Mrs. O’Mahoney.)
So…
When it came to my first official St. Patrick’s Day. With a son in preschool. And wanting to dress him in head-to-toe GREEN. Yes, I hesitated.
Hesitated BIG time.
I wanted him to look “festive” because (after all) he is 1/4 Irish AND today they are having a St. Patrick’s Day Parade around their class.
But I feared him being the ONLY one dressed from head-to-toe. And even though he’s only 3 and wouldn’t care if he was or not… there’s that Colonial Day flashback that won’t leave my mind!
So… I did the only thing I could do…
Dressed him in dark green pants. A light green long sleeved shirt. And put a little gray tee over his long sleeved shirt… yes, just in case!
And I was DELIGHTED to drop him off today and see other kids dressed in GREEN. Not all head-to-toe… but definitely some on-purpose greens from home!!
Happy St. Patrick’s Day to ALL! May the Luck of the Irish be with you TODAY!
